Exhibition honoring nurses for the last 100 years of service

The WSU College of Nursing has acquired an exhibit honoring nurses for the last 100 years of service. The exhibit features 10 display panels highlighting the progression of nursing starting in 1909, the year of the Nurse Practicing Act of 1909, which legally recognized qualified nursing school graduates as registered nurses in Washington State. The exhibit was originally developed by Washington State History Museum in partnership with the Washington State Nursing Centennial Consortium.

THE first national nurse uniforms are being re-introduced after the roll-out was halted by allergic reactions earlier this year.

A small number of nurses reported suffering skin irritations after wearing the new tunic-style uniforms.

Just weeks after they were launched, nurses in West and North Wales were allowed to revert to their old uniforms if they had suffered skin problems.

All the new uniforms, which are issued to nurses, healthcare support workers and midwives, will be pre-washed by the manufacturers.

The uniforms were introduced in Hywel Dda Health Board in April and quickly extended to Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board area.

But within days nurses started reporting suffering allergic reactions and skin irritations.

After the first cases were reported, nursing and midwifery staff were allowed to wear their old uniforms if they had experienced a reaction to the new designs.

An Assembly Government spokesman said: “Many affected have already returned to wearing the all-Wales uniform with no further adverse affects.”

Hospital ward sisters, charge nurses and their deputies will wear navy blue, and clinical nurse specialist uniforms will be royal blue.
Staff nurses will wear hospital blue uniforms and staff midwives will be dressed in postman blue. Healthcare support workers uniforms will be green, while aqua green will denote a nursery nurse.
