If people were to judge by the television ads and news reports, it would seem that the war on cancer is all but won. What weapon is being heralded? Medicine, research, tests and exams. They missed the point.
Prevention was promoted as the initial meaning of the catch the disease. Completely. It is also off the mark. Does that section if you called 911 when you came home and saw smoke billowing from your entire window? If we just stay with the philosophy of carpe diem and wait for the doctor to tell us we have a lump in the breast or prostate swell our Vacuities? Whether the cancer-causing the lack of a new cancer drug? What is the cause of cancer is totally unknown, need endless research?
First, let me put to rest the propaganda that the war is being won. Since President Nixon declared war (1971) and after more than 200 billion dollars have been spent on research (remember, a billion is a thousand million), more Americans will die of cancer in 14 months in advance rather than have died in all U.S. wars combined fight ever! (Where the March protests?) Soon, the cancer will take over heart disease as the number one killer.
A few decades ago, at the beginning of the war, there were some dramatic successes such as Hodgkin's disease and some forms of leukemia. There can be doubt that unpacks (surgical removal) of the cancer were great benefit. But the major killers such as colorectal, lung, prostate and breast cancer remained a threat as usual. The survival benefit is measured mainly in addition (not years) was added to life, not in healing. The placebo effect is by and large ignored. (People who got placebo sugar pills in cancer research have been known to lose their hair and some really heal themselves with simply think that they will recover.) A percentage of people may experience spontaneous remissions and of simple lifestyle adjustments, but cancer therapies are always credited with curing. (Investigation, Placebo Study: effects of Placebo as a conditioned response, 1985; 2 (1): 23 O'Regan B, et al, 1993 spontaneous Remission: an Annotated Bibliography of Sausalito, CA Talbot m. 1991. Holographic Universe, Harper Collins Publishers, New York, Townsend Letter, 2004; ...251: 32-3)
Statistics can always get a massage to create a desired result. The practice is rampant in cancer research. Animal models (a euphemism for the real life and being confined to feel abused by the millions) do not prove its effectiveness across the boundaries of the human species. Nor does the cell lines laboratory. That’s why the entire breakthrough on the basis of tumor shrinkage never pans out. Drug companies for a profit and the National Cancer Institute grant-based research ignores metastasis (spread of cancer cells through the body) in their positive report. Instead they highlight and focus on the results of the lab that is easier to obtain, as the shrinking of the tumor, and on easily manipulated clinical data such as the five-year survival.
Twelve new improved the drug was introduced in Europe between 1995 and 2000 are no better than drugs that they replaced. But the price is higher, all in one instance by a factor of 350 times. A new revolutionary drug, Erbitux, found shrink the tumor but not extend the life of the patient at all cost $ 2,400 per week. Avastin, other chemotherapy, by best calculations, extending the life of 400 patients of colorectal cancer of 4.7 months. Tamoxifin is proven effective in reducing breast cancer. The risk of decreased around 15%, but what wasn't as heralded is the fact that it increases the risk of endometrial cancer of the uterus about 15%. (Patient Information: Nolvadex, Zeneca Pharmaceuticals)
If the result is worth the financial devastation and a miserable life that chemotherapy, radiation and surgery impose? Is that how to spend the day one left? If such therapy does not add a few months, are they a couple of months is really worth the pain, push, poke, unrelenting nausea, staining, damaging the immune system and increased susceptibility to other diseases? Yes would be the answer that it is difficult to justify.
In the face of a diagnosis of cancer most people only raise their hands in terror and give in to the process of conventional cancer therapies death. The feeling is that something should be done, and, as doctor knows best, we must start to fight by following the advice of a doctor. But the battle does not mean surrender to the will of others who have their own personal agenda and narrows field of view
